UPCOMING MAY EVENTS

BRIDGING 1977/ 2026 : 49th Year Anniversary

Join us for a presentation about Bridging, a 1977 radical art intervention that took place across New York City. The director of the original action John DiLeva Halpern will present the project with original news broadcasts, documentation, and ephemera, including an 8-minute video by Ruben O’Malley.

At 9:00 am on the Holy Day of Ascension in 1977, Bridging featured seven artists in brightly colored jumpsuits climbing the seven suspension bridges of New York City, during rush hour. Their goal was to occupy the bridges in a joyous, collective protest, replacing the relentless media coverage of terrorism, violence, and oppression with art.

After the presentation, Carolyn Christie will lead an open conversation with Halpern and attendees on the conditions that produced Bridging in the late 70s, and what it might tell us about how art may be employed in our present circumstances.

Refreshments available. Free and open to all.

In solidarity with the individuals apprehended by ICE on March 24, attendees of this event are invited to contribute financially to their removal defense fund here.

Meet the collaborative Indonesian-based collective that curated 2022’s experimental Documenta 15, Kassel, Germany. They have been under critical fire from the German and European media for supposed “Anti-Semitic” aspects of the exhibition. This has severely threatened future Documentas.
