generating CURRICULUM: contemplative training for social engagement

ICAI is generating a curriculum that will include public interventions, project training methods (i.e. problem analysis and deconstruction), contemplative and meditation courses, and community activist network building.

We ARE offering weekly courses*, artist-led workshops, special retreats (online and in person), and publications (to be available in diverse media).

For this performance, Jatun studied the Tibetan yoga of inner heat called Tumo, remaining motionless for one hour in the forest in sub-zero temperatures. She self healed completely from a traumatic encounter with MS that had left her partially paralyzed.

INTERESSE: MOVEMENT, BREATH, VOICE & CALM ABIDING*

A 4-HR Immersive Somatic Workshop
10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Sliding Scale: $50–108

Registration & Inquiries: jatun.risba@gmail.com, john@studioicai.org

This four-hour immersive workshop explores the relationship between movement, breath, voice, attention, and embodied awareness through a synthesis of somatic practice, contemplative inquiry, and collective exploration.

Drawing from authentic movement, Tibetan yogic breathing practices, the Three Shiné (Calm Abiding) methods, and Jerzy Grotowski's physical training methodologies, participants will investigate how the body becomes a gateway to presence, resilience, emotional clarity, and self-healing.

Throughout the day we will move between activity and stillness, expression and observation, discovering how awareness itself can become a stabilizing force amidst personal and collective uncertainty.

The workshop unfolds through three progressively subtle modes of attention:

Outer Shiné (Calm Abiding with Form)

Participants work with movement, gesture, breath, sound, and focused observation of external forms. Through disciplined attention to the physical world, we cultivate grounding, sensory awareness, and the capacity to return to the present moment.

Inner Shiné (Calm Abiding with the Body)

Attention gradually turns inward. Breath, energetic sensation, subtle movement, and vocal resonance become gateways into deeper somatic awareness. Participants learn to recognize the body's innate intelligence and its capacity for regulation, healing, and emotional integration.

Secret Shiné (Calm Abiding in Awareness Itself)

Through witnessing practices, deep listening, collective attunement, and periods of silence, participants explore moments in which the boundaries between observer and observed soften. Awareness becomes less fixed on objects and more familiar with its own spacious, luminous nature.

This version positions the Three Shiné practices as the underlying contemplative architecture of the day while remaining consistent with the somatic and performance-oriented language of the original announcement. It also creates a natural bridge between Tibetan contemplative practice and Grotowski-inspired physical training without becoming overtly religious or doctrinal.

Through these practices we will investigate states that exist in-between:

— consciousness & subconsciousness

— movement & stillness

— self & others

— effort & surrender

— presence & memory

— life & impermanence

The workshop includes:

•  Authentic movement practices

•  Rhythmic and diaphragmatic breathing exercises

•  Vocal exploration and resonance work

•  Somatic witnessing practices

•  Guided Shiné meditation instruction

•  Group reflection and dialogue

•  Deep listening exercises

•  Periods of silence and contemplative rest

•  Collective attunement and relational awareness

Participants will be invited to observe how thoughts, emotions, memories, and physical sensations arise and dissolve within awareness, transforming ordinary experience into an opportunity for insight, creativity, and compassionate presence.

No prior experience with movement, yoga, meditation, performance, or somatic work is required.

Disabled participants are warmly welcome free of charge.

This workshop is intended for artists, performers, healers, educators, meditators, therapists, and anyone seeking a deeper relationship with embodiment, awareness, and the creative potential of being fully present.
